12:35 pm, FBI Safe House, 5 Hours Before Raid

Despite her previously strong words to her partner a little while ago, Alexa found herself filled with an electric energy and unable to sleep inside the small, one-bed motel room and safe house she had been appointed.

“Ugh!” She threw off the coverlet once more, stifling in the Miami heat that was still omnipresent despite the A/C and the ceiling fan that she had left buzzing on all night.

It was the case. It was the raid tomorrow. It was Florida, she thought as she swung her legs from her bed, got up, and began to pace her room.

She moved under the flickering light, dressed only in her t-shirt and shorts as the buzz and hum of the room accompanied her thoughts. On the bedside table sat the heavy accusation of her gun inside its holster, and somehow her eyes kept returning to it.

Tomorrow morning was going to be a big day. A raid on Costa Ortiz, the man who met Zholdin and the possible killer. Or at least one step closer to the killer.

Who had shown themselves VERY capable of using both long- and short-range firearms, and had probably done military service.

Damn, I should have put in a request to the National Service records on him last night, Alexa thought before realizing that it was too late now. For all she knew Ortiz could be an assumed name anyway; it didn’t particularly sound regular blonde-hair and blue-eyed American, but then again, how was she to know?

Alexa felt like the events of the last few days had been coming at her too fast, without even a chance to rise for air.

Zholdin...Perelli...Trixi...Henderson…

The names swirled around and around in her head, but she still felt no clearer about the connections between them. This bothered her. It bothered her greatly.

“You always gotta be right, kiddo?” she remembered her father asking her one day when she came home crying how she’d ‘flunked’ a math test at school, having only scored a measly 70%.

“Not right. But know where I’m wrong,” she muttered what she’d said back then to earn a chuckle from her dad and even an affectionate pat on the shoulder.

“That’s about all any of us can ask for sometimes, I guess…” he’d said.

But now, Alexa felt like she had no idea where she was wrong. Was it a Russian super-spy? Scratch that. Why the connection between Ortiz, Little Haiti, and Zholdin? Was it a mafia drugs thing? Maybe. The sons were knee-deep in every vice this city could generously put on offer, apparently…

But still, something didn’t add up. It didn’t feel right.

The killer had must’ve been tracking Kage and watching us, maybe the whole time, she suddenly thought. He had killed the Bodrov sons, then found time to keep an eye on the investigation running against him.

Who does that? Who was even capable of doing that?

“Think it through, Kiddo. I know that brain of yours can work it out...”

She heard her father’s voice, not husky and breathless yet, as if it were right there beside her.
